When your car breaks down or needs routine maintenance, you are going to need a resource that can guide you through the specific auto repair techniques and processes that are necessary to fix the problem. Do you need the manual or can you find guidance elsewhere that is reliable and adequate?
Owning an auto repair manual has its benefits. You never have to go on a search online or at the library for the information that you need. Everything you need to know and understand is at your fingertips, on your own bookshelf. If you own the manual, you can study it and cross-reference it with very little difficulty. When you are working on your car or truck, you can have the manual open to the page you need and can reference it while you work.
The ownership of an auto repair manual does have a few (albeit minor) drawbacks. You will need to keep the manual in an easily accessible location, ideally a bookshelf or storage unit in your garage. The manual can be a bit cumbersome as they tend to be large. Also, your manual will likely get very dirty as it is nearly impossible to keep anything clean which lives the majority of its life surrounded by dirt and grease.
Many people have chosen not to own their own manuals. With the advancement of the internet, many feel that the hardcopy of the manual is unnecessary. You can look up various issues that your specific vehicle may be having and can find tutorials and suggestions on how to fix the problem. Should you need some sort of reference at your fingertips, you can simply print the information that you need.
Using the internet as an auto repair resource can be just as beneficial as owning the repair manual. Since you can interact with other owners and mechanics, you may find that the online information is more helpful than a bulky manual.
There are times where using the internet for auto repair is superior to owning the manual. When a problem occurs that is not diagnosed in the manual, chances are very good that you can find someone online who has either experienced the same problem or has at least observed the problem before. Being able bounce ideas off of another human being is definitely superior to relying on printed text.
Perhaps the most significant criteria for both online help and hardcopies of manuals is preference. You should go with whatever makes you comfortable. For many people, holding the manual in their hands is important. For others, being able to find solutions online is thought to be beneficial. Whatever you choose, make sure you take a few moments to make sure you have all the necessary information before you begin working on your vehicle.
