A Closer Look At Washing Machines

Washing machines have been around for so long already that it’s hard to imagine life without them. Let’s face it; they must surely be one of the most home appliances ever invented, so it’s hardly surprising there are so many great makes to choose from nowadays. Even so, some makes and models always seem to be more popular than others, and a perfect example of this is the classic Maytag Washing Machine. For the last few decades, Maytag has consistently been producing machines that have gone on to become immensely popular between consumers. Those people who can remember watching TV during the 1970′s may recall the brilliant Maytag advertising campaign, and it is often said that this is what effectively put Maytag machines in the spotlight.

The adverts which ran in 1970′s and into the 1980s centered on a bored repairman that wasn’t happy with his job because he rarely had anything to do because of the fact that Maytag Washers never break down. Who would have thought such a simplistic series if adverts would prove to be so incredibly effective, and it wasn’t long before Maytag had successfully managed to convince the public their appliance were built to last. In fact, the advertising campaign had a similar effect on the sales of all Maytag appliances, and not only on washing machine sales.

Why was such a campaign so successful? You could say there was a significant element of truth to it. Maytag Washing Machines are known for being durable. Had this not truly been the case then the classic commercials would never have been able to shape a generation of people into truly believing what the advertising campaign has put forth.

The bottom line here is that durability is something the consumer marketplace takes seriously. Ironically, it was a somewhat less than serious and definitely humorous approach to informing the public. But, no matter how great an advertising campaign is, it cannot successfully promote a product that flat out does not deliver on expectations. Well, it can for the short term but only for the short term. The classic Maytag Repairman commercials did not deliver a short term success. These commercials definitely delivered a lot more than short term success. The success lasted decades! Have there been other advertising campaigns that delivered such a stunning amount of success? It would be quite difficult to find one.

Of course, there is a great deal of need associated with purchasing such appliances. People purchase washing machines because the alternative is doing a load of laundry by hand. Needless to say, that would be a very difficult job to do! As such, the need for a washing machine is certainly underscored. However, there is not a need for “only old” washing machine. Those appliances known for breaking down or operating in an unreliable manner assuredly will not be of much value to consumers. Maytag Washers are definitely durable which can be considered their proverbial claim to fame. And this fame was established in the legendary commercials of prior generations. Sure, there were modern variants on the classic Maytag Repairman commercials. They were effective but they did not make as much of an impactl as the legendary commercials of prior decades.
