Large and Small Tractors for Sale – Which Size Suits Your Farming Business? by Jerry Thomas
Large and small tractors for sale are a far cry from the options available to farmers and agriculturalists some one hundred and fifty years or so ago. Back then the only choice of size of traction units available were large and monster, some weighing many tons and to say they were slow, lumbering leviathans is probably an understatement. Introduced in the middle of the nineteenth century, they were manufactured by hand and most parts and elements were made as they were needed by skilled craftsmen.
Pieced together in huge workshops they were engineering marvels of the day, and not unlike the marvels of modern tractors we see today. However back then they were immensely novel items and when a traction engine owned by an agricultural contractor turned up at a farm with the threshing tackle and specialist farm hands in tow to harvest the end of summer wheat, barley and maize crops, invariably the whole village would turn out to see one of these monsters at work.
Small tractors or traction engines as they were known then had not even been thought of, let alone built. Raw power was the order of the day and the bigger the engine the more steam power which could be raised to work the new large multi furrowed ploughs, threshing tackles, combine harvesters and other emerging farm implements of the day. Meanwhile in vineyards and small holdings the maintenance of the ground and harvesting of the crops carried on pretty much as it always had until the introduction of internal combustion engine tractors during and after the First World War.
Invariably it is wartime which drives forward new technologies, and the First World War is no exception. More efficient methods of killing became available with the recently invented internal combustion engine, and as more and more ingenious ways of exploiting the ICE were created from the needs of the military, these inevitably filtered through into civilian life and work environments. So much so that by the middle of the 1920s the steam engine traction engine had all but disappeared and multiple sized tractor units were becoming available and the entire agricultural industry was revolutionized into what we recognize today- from small holding to farms of many thousands of acres.
